The college is located on K.R. Road, near City Market, in the heart of the city. The college was established in 1955 and is under the aegis of the government of Karnataka. The college is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and approved by the National Medical Commission. The college offers a five-and-a-half-year MBBS course with 250 seats. The college offers postgraduate courses in various medical specialties.

The area of the campus of BMCRI covers 200 acres. It has well-equipped lecture halls, demonstration rooms, and labs for pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects, a central library with access to a vast amount of medical literature, and sports/recreation facilities. It is also connected to a number of large teaching hospitals that offer a wide range of clinical facilities. There are separate hostels for males and females, along with mess facilities, a student lounge, a gym, and outdoor games facilities. All of this infrastructure is for the benefit of the medical education as well as the patient load that is treated in the hospitals.
