|Government|Established 1966The Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (IGMCH) or generally known as IGMC Shimla, is an outstanding, premier co-education public medical institute situated in capital city of Himachal Pradesh. Inaugurated in 1966 as Himachal Pradesh Medical College (HPMC) and thereafter in 1984 known as IGMC, this is one of the premier, old medical institute in Himachal Pradesh. The institute is recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated with Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU), Mandi (previously was affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University). It permits an admission intake capacity of 120 seats for the state's main, undergraduate, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) residency track in addition to myriad post-graduation (MD/MS) and super-specialty (DM/M.Ch) courses. The seats are high in demand, being filled through national NEET-UG competitive merit poolsplit between 15% All India Quota being operated by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and 85% State Quota operated by AMRU. Being a prime government institution, IGMC Shimla is marked with extremely economic public fee matrix (approx. 60,000/year on an average). With the added responsibility of being approved Regional Cancer Center (RCC) of India, and an apex diagnostic center, the university combine deep clinical heritage and phenomenal public patient volumes to mold out world class medical graduates.

By Air: Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), which is roughly 120–140 miles from Shimla, is the closest airport. From there, travel to Shimla city via state bus or cab.
By Train: Kalka Railway Station is the nearest broad-gauge railhead. You can go by bus or cab or by toy train (narrow gauge) from Kalka to Shimla.
By Road: Chandigarh, Delhi, and other major cities have regular Himachal Road Transport buses and private cabs from Shimla, which is well-served by NH5. Once in Shimla, local cars can take you to IGMC, which is located in the heart of Lakkar Bazar/Ridge. If you live close enough, you can walk there.
