Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College & Hospital (JLNGMC) in universally referred to as GMCH Chamba is a co-educational public medical college of excellence which was established in the academic year 2016-17. Initially constructed under a flag-ship centrally sponsored scheme to upgrade tertiary health care in the remotest and less accessible border regions, the college was formed by upgradation of the then Regional Hospital in Chamba. Officially, it has been given recognition by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is a proudly affiliated to the Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU), Mandi.
With a capacity of an annual intake of 120 seats to its flagship undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) residency program along with postgraduate DNB/MD/MS courses in select specialities, the college admissions take place based on a merit profiling via the national NEET-UG examination and the counseling sessions are split between the 15% All India Quota regulated by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the 85% Himachal Pradesh State Quota managed by AMRU. Being a public subsidized welfare asset, the college follows a subsidised public service fee matrix (average of approximately 60,000 per year). Set up partially in the parts of the historical Akhand Chandi Palace and new dedicated extensions, the college combines heritage with cutting edge intensive clinical training to train efficient future medical professionals with community perspective.

The campus consists of contemporary academic buildings with large lecture halls, labs for pre-clinical and clinical disciplines, digital classrooms, and display rooms. Research and study are supported by a central library that has journals and textbooks. There are common rooms, mess halls, recreational spaces, and separate hostel amenities for males and girls. In addition to emergency services, OPD/IPD care, diagnostic facilities, and specialty departments like medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, and more, the college is connected to a teaching hospital that serves as a tertiary care center. In order to comply with NMC standards, infrastructure is continuously upgraded.
